Predicting the Size of Depth-First Branch and Bound Search Trees

چکیده
This paper provides algorithms for predicting the size of the Expanded Search Tree (EST ) of Depthfirst Branch and Bound algorithms (DFBnB) for optimization tasks. The prediction algorithm is implemented and evaluated in the context of solving combinatorial optimization problems over graphical models such as Bayesian and Markov networks. Our methods extend to DFBnB the approaches provided by Knuth-Chen schemes that were designed and applied for predicting the EST size of backtracking search algorithms. Our empirical results demonstrate good predictions which are superior to competing schemes.

Memory-Efficient Tree Size Prediction for Depth-First Search in Graphical Models
We address the problem of predicting the size of the search tree explored by Depth-First Branch and Bound (DFBnB) while solving optimization problems over graphical models. Building upon methodology introduced by Knuth and his student Chen, this paper presents a memory-efficient scheme called Retentive Stratified Sampling (RSS). Through empirical evaluation on probabilistic graphical models fro...
متن کاملAND/OR Tree Search for Constraint Optimization
The paper presents and evaluates the power of a new framework for constraint optimization, based on the concept of AND/OR search trees. The virtue of the AND/OR search tree representation is that its size may be smaller than that of a traditional OR search tree. We introduce a new generation of depth first Branch-and-Bound algorithms that traverse an AND/OR search space and use the Mini-Bucket ...
متن کاملOptimizing Search Strategies in k-d Trees
While k-d trees have been widely studied and used, their theoretical advantages are often not realized due to ineffective search strategies and generally poor performance in high dimensional spaces. In this paper we outline an effective search algorithm for k-d trees that combines an optimal depth-first branch and bound (DFBB) strategy with a unique method for path ordering and pruning. Our ini...
متن کاملA Branch and Bound Method for Finding Flow Path Designing of Agv Systems (RESEARCH NOTE)
One of the important factor in the design of automated guided vehicle systems (AGVS) is the flow path design. This paper presents a branch-and-bound algorithm to determining the flow path by considering not only loaded-vehicles, but also empty-vehicles. The objective is to find the flow path, which will minimize total travel of loaded vehicles. We know that in branch-and-bound method a branch c...
متن کاملDepth-First vs. Best-First Search: New Results
Best-first search (BFS) expands the fewest nodes among all admissible algorithms using the same cost function, but typically requires exponential space. Depth-first search needs space only linear in the maximumsearch depth, but expands more nodes than BFS. Using a random tree, we analytically show that the expected number of nodes expanded by depth-first branch-and-bound (DFBnB) is no more than...
